What is give up and die? The best description: an unorthodoxed religious art installment.
Like my folk band (www.TheFalderals.com) which takes its name from an old folk lyric and literally means nonsense, GiveUpandDie.com is not meant to be taken too seriously. If you are seriously considering giving up and dying in the literal sense, please find support (www.suicide.org or send me an email in the comments section and I’ll help get you support).
I believe in two simple ideas. You’ll be happier if you can GIVE UP wanting things AND realize you’re about to DIE. Give up and die is an age old philosophy that’s perfect for today’s mad and anxiety-driven world. Once you give up all that is not essential, and remember you will die (in five minutes or fifty years), you are ready to really start living a genuine life.
Give up wanting things to change or wanting new stuff to come or wanting bad stuff to go away. Focus on the fact that you are totally and completely and positively for sure about to die in the next few minutes (or several decades, give or take). Now ask yourself what really matters. This is a handy reflection for everything from deciding what to toss from the hall closet to choosing the right job. I’m about to die. Is this how I want to spend my time? If the answer is yes, then great. Keep doing whatever it is. If it is no–then change. The problem is, you can’t really live each day as if it is your last, because then I hope you would not be reading this, you’d be making love or going to church or eating at a really nice restaurant with great people. Instead, we have to live our whole life as if it’s our last life–because it is (at least for now).
I am not a nihilist. My personal goal is enlightenment. The challenge is to see if I can do this with a full house (three kids), a band (The Falderals), a writing career, and a full-time job (public school teachers are trying to take over the world). Give up and die is the place where I experiment with philosophies and theologies, try to understand creative ways to be happy, and poke fun of anything that takes itself too seriously.
I want to be enlightened. I also want to feed my three kids, pay the mortgage, keep my band rocking, and make my wife happy. I think religion can be a vital experience, and so can a strong martini and a dirty joke.
A lot can be achieved in life if we give up a little and remember death is on its way. To find out your exact date of demise, check out http://www.deathclock.com.
Give Up and Die…You’ll be glad you did.
